Why does it feel rough?
It has strongly keeled scales, which is where the name comes from. It is completely normal and does not mean the snake is dehydrated.
How big does it get?
Small, usually well under a metre, so a modest enclosure is enough for its whole life.
Does it bite?
It has a fast feeding strike, so feed with tongs. Away from food it is generally easy to handle and calms quickly.
Is it a good beginner snake?
Yes, if you accept that it hides most of the time. Care is simple, feeding is reliable and it stays small.
