How big does it get?
The largest of the European tortoises, around 30 cm, and the back of the shell flares out like a skirt when adult.
Does it need a garden?
Yes. An adult needs an outdoor pen with sun, shade and a dry shelter, because a tortoise kept in a plastic box will not thrive.
What does it eat?
Leafy greens and weeds, high in fibre and low in protein. Fruit only as a rare treat.
How long does it live?
Commonly over fifty years, so think about who will inherit it.
